What is International Day of the Girl?

by | Sep 19, 2020 | News Feed

Since 2012, The United Nations has marked October 11th as the  International Day of the Girl. This annual campaign is used to shine a light on the challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

This year, under the theme, “My voice, our equal future”, YLF will seize the opportunity to reimagine a better world inspired by adolescent girls – energized and recognized, counted and invested in.

As adolescent girls worldwide assert their power as change-makers, International Day of the Girl 2020 will focus on their demands to:

  • Live free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, and HIV and AIDS
  • Learn new skills towards the futures they choose
  • Lead as a generation of activists accelerating social change

YLF will be participating in this annual campaign for the first time, with the remarkable young girls from Government Day secondary school Zambuk. We will also be amplifying the voices of young girls in Gombe State as they stand up for their rights, through an essay writing competition!
